The 2021 BMW 330i xDrive is the latest in a line of vehicles that has long been a benchmark for other automakers. Originally compact in dimensions, the 3-Series has grown into mid-size proportions in recent years.

Redesigned as a 2019 model, the 2021 BMW 330i xDrive has changed little for the 2021 model year. Live Cockpit Plus, a digital display setup with navigation, is available. The GT model has been discontinued.

Two distinct engines are available, with either rear- or all-wheel drive. The 330i uses a strong 2.0-liter turbo-4, rated at 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Enthusiasts might favor the M340i, which benefits from a 3.0-liter turbo-6 that yields 382 hp and 369 pound-feet (from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm). In addition to bigger (19-inch) wheels, the M340i includes an adaptive suspension.

Both the 330i and M340i use BMW’s familiar 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (called xDrive) adds $2,000 to either model’s price.

The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick when equipped with the adaptive automatic high-beam headlights included in the $5,900 Executive Package option. Frontal crash prevention (vehicle-to-vehicle) is rated “Superior.” The 3-Series earned “Good” ratings in every IIHS test.

Outward vision is good. Valuable safety features are either standard or optional. Lane-departure warnings, forward-collision warnings, city collision mitigation, and the low-speed automatic emergency braking are standard. A “Professional” driver-assistance package includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance. An optional parking-assistance feature can maneuver the car into parallel or perpendicular spots.

BMW is expected to release an M3 model for 2021, as well as reviving the 330e plug-in hybrid.
